Tortoreto

The city of Tortoreto lies in the northern part of the Abruzzo coast, and it confines with Alba Adriatica at north and Giulianova at south, where Salinello rivers flows. The old part of Tortoreto has medieval origins and it is divided into two parts: Terravecchia and Terranova. Tortoreto Lido is a famous tourist resort, that every year attracts visitors from all over the peninsula, thanks to its sandy beaches. Tortoreto and Alba Adriatica form a unique urban structure, as in the past the second was only a division of the first. Only in 1956 the two municipalities spred apart as a result of an electoral campaign.

The territory of Tortoreto was definitely inhabited since the V millennium A.C. , proved by the traces of inhabited villages and tombs found here. The first urban development of the city took place during Roman times, there were found different objects like devices and coins. During Middle Ages Tortoreto is ruled by the Dukes of Acquaviva, then by the kingdom of Napoli till 1860, the year of Italy's Unity.

EVENTS

At Tortoreto Paese you should visit the church "Santa Maria della Misericordia" and The church of Sant'Agostino. Don't miss "Il Palio del Barone", (August, the 18th), an important commemorable historical event concerning the marriage of two noble families, celebrated with banquets, games and street parades. Also at Tortoreto Paese there are held gastronomic manifestations, a Gastronomic Festival of Regional Products is organized and also a Seafood Festival, where you may taste the freshest seafood and fish.
